  • When should my child start swimming?
Children are born with a natural affinity to water, therefore the earlier the better. We do note a significant difference in skill level between children who start as infants and those who do not. Having said that, it's never too late. If infant lessons are not possible, we recommend 12-18 months as the minimum age, as those who start later than this are at higher risk of developing a fear of the water or alternatively, overconfidence.
  • What age groups do you cater to?
We cater to individuals of all ages, from infants to adults. Our programs are designed to meet the specific needs and developmental stages of each age group.
  • Do you offer free baby lessons?
Yes, we offer lessons for children starting as young as six months old. Children aged three to six months swim for free! Our experienced instructors use gentle and engaging methods to introduce water safety and develop basic swimming skills.
  • How long are learn to swim lessons?
Our swim lessons typically last 30 minutes, providing an optimal balance of instruction and practice time. However, lesson durations may vary based on the age and skill level of the participants. Squads swim for longer and there are some private lessons available that are 20mins long.
  • How can I enrol my child in swim lessons?
Enrolling your child is easy! Simply contact us with some simple information such as the age and swimming ability of your child. If your child is new to swimming we may need to organise for an assessment depending on their age. Our friendly staff will guide you through the enrolment process and provide all the necessary information.
  • Do you offer make-up lessons?
Yes, we understand that unforeseen circumstances may arise. We offer make-up lessons for missed classes. Each student is eligible for up to three make-up lessons per term though more can be arranged in exceptional circumstances. These make-up lessons can be scheduled within three months (across different terms if necessary) and are subject to availability in classes of the same level. Please note that we cannot guarantee the same instructor for make-up lessons, as availability may vary. Our goal is to provide flexibility and ensure that your child receives the full value of their swim lesson experience.
  • What is the student-to-instructor ratio in your classes?
We maintain small class sizes to ensure personalised attention and maximise learning opportunities. The student-to-instructor ratio varies from as low as 3:1, and will depend on the level. We strive to keep ratios low to provide individualised instruction and guidance.
  • How do the terms operate?
We operate on a term-based schedule, offering swim lessons in four 10-week terms per year. Our term dates align with the Queensland public school system, ensuring convenience for families. Between terms, we also offer an optional holiday program, providing an opportunity for continued skill development and aquatic fun during school breaks.
  • Do you offer lessons in the school holidays?
Absolutely! Our holiday program is a fantastic opportunity for accelerated skill progression and continued learning. We highly recommend our intensive program, where children have the chance to swim every day for a week. This concentrated approach allows for focused instruction and helps students make significant strides in their swimming abilities. It's an excellent option for those looking to boost their skills or make notable progress in a shorter timeframe.
  • Why is my child not progressing?
All children progress at their own rate and we always support them to do so. There are a number of factors that may result in a period of plateu for a child including: growth spurts and physical development, busy periods at school, teaching sytles and inconsitency in practice and attendance. Please remember a child swimming one lesson per week will only swim about 20 hours per year. Changing teachers or adding an additional lesson for a short period can kickstart progression, and otherwise, being patient to allow your child to work through acquiring a new skill will support their confidence and development.
  • Should I consider private lessons?
Private lessons are ideal for those who may be a bit older when they start swimming, as there may be a significant gap in skill when compared to same age peers. Private lessons can also be very beneficial for those swimmers who have had an extended break from swimming, those with a fear of the water, or anyone wishing to maximise their practice time. Private lessons are usually not required ongoing, the aim to to address a specific need and once mastered, swimmers then usually progress well in group lessons.
  • Are your instructors qualified and experienced?
Absolutely! Our instructors are highly qualified and experienced in teaching swimming. They hold nationally recognised certifications, undergo regular training, and have a deep understanding of aquatic education. Your safety and the quality of instruction are our top priorities.
  • Do you have a structured curriculum for swimming lessons?
Yes, we have a structured curriculum that is tailored to each age and skill level. Our progressive programs focus on building water confidence, stroke development, water safety, and overall swimming skills. We ensure that our students develop a strong foundation and progress at their own pace. Students are constantly being assessed and skills are periodically updated and can be tracked via our online portal.
  • What safety measures do you have in place?
Safety is our top priority. Our facility is equipped with all required safety features, including proper fencing, first aid equipment, and adherence to all necessary safety guidelines. Additionally, all instructors and staff members are trained in CPR and water safety protocols. We also keep track of relevant medical conditions and keep action plans on hand. If your child has a medically significant condition and requires an action plan, please discuss with staff.
  • What if my child has special needs or requires additional assistance?
We welcome all individuals, including those with special needs, and we strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment. We recommend reaching out to our team to discuss any specific requirements or concerns. We will work with you to ensure that your child receives the appropriate accommodations and support. Please note our pools are unfortunately not equipped with wheelchair access equipment, though we hope to change this in the future.
  • Do you offer swim lessons for adults?
We run an adult squad for those who have a basic level of swimming ability. This squad caters for a wide variety of skill levels but generally requires a swimmer being able to complete a couple of laps. A dedicated coach provides instruction and feedback to refine your technique. Swimmers interested in competing may also choose to join our masters swimming team. For those looking for learn to swim lessons, these are available as private instruction only. Instructors will tailor the lessons to your needs and goals. Availability and times for adult learn to swim vary.
  • Do you accept SwimStart vouchers?
Yes! We accept SwimStart vouchers for all eligible families with a valid voucher. These must be claimed within the qualifying period. If you have a voucher, please send in via email and advise who the voucher is for. We also accept FairPlay vouchers, however due to the rules of this program, these vouchers can only be claimed for Flinders Phoenix registration fees via swimming QLD and not for swimming term fees.
  • How do I join a squad?
